When an Instagram DM feels off
A flattering stranger
An attractive account you don’t know starts complimenting you and won’t stop.
A trading “mentor”
They show off profits and offer to teach you, for a deposit.
A collab offer
A “brand” wants you as an ambassador, but you pay for the products first.
How to spot a fake Instagram account in your DMs
Most Instagram scams start with a message from an account you don’t follow. The profile is built to look real, and the photos are usually taken from someone else.
Signs an Instagram account is fake
- The account is new, or most posts were uploaded on the same day or two.
- Every photo looks professional, and no friends ever tag or comment on them.
- It follows thousands of people but has few real interactions.
- The handle is a name plus random numbers, or a near copy of a real account.
- Their story about where they live doesn’t match where the account is based, under “About this account”.
- They push to move the chat to WhatsApp or Telegram quickly.
Common Instagram DM scams
- Romance: weeks of attention, then an emergency that needs money or gift cards.
- Investment: a “mentor” or friend shows crypto or forex wins and sends you to a trading site.
- Fake brand deals: you’re “selected” as an ambassador but must buy the products or pay shipping.
- Giveaways: you “won”, and only need to pay a fee or share card details to claim it.
- Hacked friends: a friend’s account asks for money or a login code. Call them on another channel first.
How do I check who is really behind the account?
- Screenshot their clearest profile photo or a selfie they posted.
- Search it here and look at the closest matches first.
- Open each match. The same face under another name, or on a model’s or influencer’s page, means the photos are stolen.
- Ask for a short live video call. Fake accounts almost always refuse.
- Never send money, gift cards or a login code to someone you only know from DMs.
What to do if it’s a scam
- Stop replying and don’t click links they sent.
- Report the account from its profile in the app, and block it.
- If you paid, contact your bank or card issuer straight away.
- In the US, report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and at ic3.gov if you lost money.

Questions
Can I tell if an Instagram account is fake from its photo?
Often. If the same face appears on other accounts under different names, or on a model’s or influencer’s page, the photos were very likely taken. A match is a similar face, not proof, so weigh it with the other signs.
What if the search finds nothing?
Then the photo isn’t on public pages we can see. That can mean a real, private person, or a new photo, including an AI-generated one. Keep checking the other signs and ask for a video call.
Will the account know I checked them?
No. We don’t contact anyone and we don’t log in to Instagram.
How does it work?
You upload a photo, and we search publicly available web pages for the same face. Each search is paid up front and shows every match with its link, its score and the site it’s on. If it finds no matches, you get your money back automatically.
What does it cost?
It’s $4.99 per search, 3 searches for $9.99, or 10 for $19.99. One-time payments, no subscription. If a search finds no matches, we refund what it cost, automatically. If it can’t run (no clear face), the search goes back on your account.
How accurate are the results?
Each match shows a similarity score. A high score means a very similar face, not a confirmed identity, so always verify before you act.
Do you store my photo?
Your full photo never leaves your device: only a crop around the face is sent, securely, to our search partner. We keep that crop with your private results so you can see which face was searched, and delete both after 48 hours.
