How a “wrong number” turns into a scam

How the wrong number scam works

These texts are not mistakes. Scammers send them in bulk and talk to whoever replies. The goal is a long, friendly relationship that ends with you “investing” on a fake platform, a pattern often called pig butchering.

What do wrong number scam texts look like?

  • A greeting meant for someone else: “Hi Lisa, are we still on for dinner?”
  • A booking or appointment you never made.
  • A first name only, from a number you don’t know.
  • A message that switches to WhatsApp, Telegram or LINE soon after you reply.
  • A profile picture of a very attractive, well-off person.

What happens if you reply?

Replying tells the sender your number is active. If you keep talking, the stranger becomes a friend or a romantic interest over days or weeks. They share photos of travel, cars and nice meals, then mention how much they earn from crypto or gold trading, and offer to show you how. The app or site they send you to is controlled by the scammers. Early “profits” are fake, and withdrawals are blocked once you have deposited more.

How do I check the person behind the texts?

  1. Save the clearest photo they sent, or their profile picture.
  2. Search it here and read the free preview count.
  3. Open each match. The same face under another name, or on a model’s or influencer’s page, means the photos are stolen.
  4. Ask for a live video call. Scammers usually find a reason to refuse.
  5. Never install an app or open an account on a site they recommend.

What should I do if I’ve already sent money?

  1. Stop sending money, even to “unlock” a withdrawal or pay a “tax”.
  2. Contact your bank or exchange right away and ask about a recall or freeze.
  3. Keep the chats, wallet addresses and the app or site link.
  4. Report it at ic3.gov and reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  5. Be wary of anyone who later offers to recover your money for a fee. That is often a second scam.

Questions

Should I reply to a wrong number text?

It’s safest not to. Delete it, block the number, and in the US you can forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your carrier.

Can a photo search tell me if the texter is a scammer?

It can show whether their photos belong to someone else. The same face under a different name is a strong warning sign. A match is a similar face, not proof, and no matches doesn’t prove they’re real.

They never asked for money. Is it still a scam?

It can be. These scams often run for weeks before money comes up, and the first ask is usually to “try” an investment app, not a direct request.

How does it work?

You upload a photo, and we search publicly available web pages for the same face. Your first preview is free and shows how many matches there are. After that, each search costs one search and shows every match with its link.

What does it cost?

Your first preview is free. Then it’s $4.99 per search, 3 searches for $9.99, or 10 for $19.99. One-time payments, no subscription. If a search finds no matches, we refund what it cost, automatically. If it can’t run (no clear face), the search goes back on your account.

How accurate are the results?

Each match shows a similarity score. A high score means a very similar face, not a confirmed identity, so always verify before you act.

Do you store my photo?

Your full photo never leaves your device: only a crop around the face is sent, securely, to our search partner. We keep that crop with your private results so you can see which face was searched, and delete both after 48 hours.
