When a catfish check is worth it

How to tell if someone is catfishing you

Catfishing means using someone else’s photos and a made-up identity. It happens on dating apps, Instagram, games and chat apps.

What are the signs of a catfish?

  • They always have a reason not to video call or meet.
  • Their photos look professional, or you only get a handful of them.
  • Their social accounts are new, empty or have few real interactions.
  • They fall for you very fast and say it first.
  • Their story has gaps or changes when you ask details twice.
  • They ask you to move to a private app quickly.

How do you check a photo?

  1. Save or screenshot the clearest photo with their face.
  2. Crop so the face fills most of the frame.
  3. Upload it and read the free preview count.
  4. Open each match and compare the name, location and story.

What does the result tell you?

The same face under a different name, or on a stock photo page, is a strong warning sign. Matches with the same name and a story that fits are reassuring. Remember that a match is a similar face, not proof.

What if the search finds nothing?

No matches doesn’t prove they’re real. The photo could be brand new, from a private account, or generated by AI, and none of those leave a public trail. Ask for a live video call and see if they agree.

What should you do if you’re being catfished?

  1. Stop sending money, gift cards or private photos.
  2. Keep screenshots of the chat and profile.
  3. Report the account in the app you’re using.
  4. In the US, report fraud to reportfraud.ftc.gov or ic3.gov.
  5. If you paid, contact your bank right away.

Questions

Can this prove someone is a catfish?

No. It shows where a similar face appears on public pages. If those pages belong to someone with a different name, that’s a strong reason to ask hard questions.

What if the photos are AI-generated?

Generated faces often don’t exist anywhere else, so a search can come back empty. A video call is the better test.

Does this work for people I met outside dating apps?

Yes. Any photo works: Instagram, a game, a group chat or a text. We search public web pages, so it doesn’t matter where you got the picture.

How does it work?

You upload a photo, and we search publicly available web pages for the same face. Your first preview is free and shows how many matches there are. After that, each search costs one search and shows every match with its link.

What does it cost?

Your first preview is free. Then it’s $4.99 per search, 3 searches for $9.99, or 10 for $19.99. One-time payments, no subscription. If a search finds nothing (no matches, or no clear face), you get a free search back on your account.

How accurate are the results?

Each match shows a similarity score. A high score means a very similar face, not a confirmed identity, so always verify before you act.

Do you store my photo?

Your full photo never leaves your device: only a crop around the face is sent, securely, to our search partner. We keep that crop with your private results so you can see which face was searched, and delete both after 48 hours.
