When a Facebook profile feels off
A charming stranger
A good-looking profile you’ve never met adds you, then messages you every day.
A friend, twice
You get a new request from someone you’re already friends with.
A soldier or doctor
They’re overseas, can’t video call, and soon need help with a fee.
How to tell if a Facebook profile is fake
Facebook scammers start with a friend request or a Messenger chat, then build trust before money comes up. The photos are usually taken from a real person’s account.
Signs a Facebook profile is fake
- Few friends, and almost none in your area or with your interests.
- Most photos were added on the same day or two, and nobody comments on them.
- The profile picture looks professional, and there are no casual photos with family or friends.
- Work and school say “widowed engineer”, “US Army”, “doctor with the UN” or nothing at all.
- They found you through a group or a comment, not through anyone you know.
- They ask to move to WhatsApp, Telegram or text within days.
Common Facebook scammer scripts
- Romance: daily messages and big feelings, then a medical bill, customs fee or flight to see you.
- Cloned friend: a copy of a friend’s account asks for money, a code or to “vote” through a link.
- Grant or prize: a “friend” says they got government grant money and you can too, for a fee.
- Investment: someone shares crypto or forex profits and offers to show you the platform.
- Deployed soldier: they can’t call, need leave papers or a package shipped, and you pay.
How do I check if a Facebook account is real?
- Open their profile and save their clearest profile picture or a photo of their face.
- Search it here and read the free preview count.
- Open each match. The same face under another name, or on a model’s or soldier’s public page, means the photos are stolen.
- If the request looks like a friend, ask that friend by phone or text whether it’s really them.
- Ask for a short live video call. Fake profiles almost always refuse or keep postponing.
What to do if it’s a scammer
- Stop replying and don’t send money, gift cards, crypto or any code you receive.
- Open the profile, tap the three dots (…), report it, then block it.
- If it’s a copy of a friend, tell them so their friends can report it too.
- If you paid, call your bank or card issuer straight away.
- In the US, report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and at ic3.gov if you lost money.
Three taps. About thirty seconds.

Questions
Why would someone send a second friend request from my friend’s name?
That’s usually a cloned account: a scammer copies a friend’s name and photos, then messages their friends asking for money or a code. Check with your friend on another channel before you accept.
Can I tell if a Facebook profile is fake from its photo?
Often. If the same face shows up on other profiles under different names, or on a model’s or influencer’s page, the photos were very likely taken. A match is a similar face, not proof, so weigh it with the other signs.
Will they know I checked their photo?
No. We don’t contact anyone and we don’t log in to Facebook.
How does it work?
You upload a photo, and we search publicly available web pages for the same face. Your first preview is free and shows how many matches there are, the closest faces and which sites they’re on. After that, each search costs one search and shows every match with its link.
What does it cost?
Your first preview is free. Then it’s $4.99 per search, 3 searches for $9.99, or 10 for $19.99. One-time payments, no subscription. If a search finds no matches, we refund what it cost, automatically. If it can’t run (no clear face), the search goes back on your account.
How accurate are the results?
Each match shows a similarity score. A high score means a very similar face, not a confirmed identity, so always verify before you act.
Do you store my photo?
Your full photo never leaves your device: only a crop around the face is sent, securely, to our search partner. We keep that crop with your private results so you can see which face was searched, and delete both after 48 hours.
