When the soldier asks for help

The stories fake soldiers tell

Scammers like a military persona because it explains why they are far away and hard to reach. The photos are usually taken from real service members.

What do military scammers ask for?

  • Money for leave, so they can come home to meet you.
  • Fees to ship a package, a chest of cash or “personal belongings”.
  • Help paying for a satellite phone, internet or a camera.
  • A loan because their pay or bank account is frozen.
  • Gift cards or crypto, because wires are “not possible” from base.

Do real soldiers ask civilians for money?

Real service members have a chain of command, pay and support channels, so they should not need a stranger to fund leave or pay their communications. If a person you have never met asks for money for any of this, treat it as a red flag. When in doubt, don’t send anything.

How do stolen service-member photos get used?

Scammers copy pictures of real soldiers from social media, news stories and public posts. The same face can then appear on many fake profiles with different names, ranks and home towns. Searching the photo can reveal the real owner, or a spread of profiles that don’t match each other.

How do I verify a soldier I met online?

  1. Ask for a live video call. Watch for excuses.
  2. Search their best face photo here and check each match.
  3. Compare names, ranks and stories against what you were told.
  4. Never send money, gift cards or crypto while you are still unsure.
  5. If you have been targeted, report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov.

Questions

Does a uniform photo prove they are a soldier?

No. Uniform photos are easy to copy from someone else’s social media. Searching the face can show whose photo it really is.

What do military romance scammer pictures look like?

Usually real photos of real service members: uniform portraits, selfies in fatigues, pictures with kids or a dog. Scammers copy them from social media and reuse the same set on many profiles under different names, which is why the photos look convincing on their own.

What if the photo matches a real service member?

It may mean the photo was stolen from that person. Be careful: a match is a similar face, not proof, and you should never contact the real person to accuse them.

What if I’ve already paid?

Stop paying, contact your bank or payment app, and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov. Keep your messages as evidence.

How does it work?

You upload a photo, and we search publicly available web pages for the same face. Each search is paid up front and shows every match with its link, its score and the site it’s on. If it finds no matches, you get your money back automatically.

What does it cost?

It’s $4.99 per search, 3 searches for $9.99, or 10 for $19.99. One-time payments, no subscription. If a search finds no matches, we refund what it cost, automatically. If it can’t run (no clear face), the search goes back on your account.

How accurate are the results?

Each match shows a similarity score. A high score means a very similar face, not a confirmed identity, so always verify before you act.

Do you store my photo?

Your full photo never leaves your device: only a crop around the face is sent, securely, to our search partner. We keep that crop with your private results so you can see which face was searched, and delete both after 48 hours.
