Discord servers and usernames

Since the opening of discord to the general public, the number of new weekly discord users has been rising steadily. It is estimated that its membership has bypassed popular chat systems like the business-oriented slack chat system. One of the most attractive features of Discord is the high level of privacy of discord groups and servers and their ease of maintenance.

Although Discord was primarily meant for gamers, the system could not resist the temptation to develop to a full-fledged social app catering to the needs of people from all walks of life. This is exactly how a dedicated server system in discord was born. In Discord, servers are easy to set up and operate. Every single topic that you can think about can have its server. The server administrators retain the right of admission to their servers and membership to a server is strictly by invitation. One thing that many discord users like is the fact that one can have a separate nickname for the very server you are a member of. Servers can be for any contemporary topic and many of the times users may need to adapt their nicknames to match the expectations of a particular server. For example, it would be inappropriate to use the same name for both a dating server and another server with some religious inclinations.

Going by discord’s official regulations, discord usernames can contain most valid Unicode code characters excluding all zero-width, non-rendering characters and unnecessary spaces. Valid username must be between 2 and 32 characters long. Nicknames are also subject to this rule with the only difference being that they can have a single character length.

A large number of groups and servers and the varied topics of discussion in each of these gives users the need for separate nicknames. Discord nicknames are usually different from discord usernames for the largest percentage of users.

Here is how you can change your nickname for any particular server on discord.

  1. The first thing is to ensure you are logged in in your account. If not, please do so to access the menu.
  2. Select the option “Change nickname” from the left sidebar menu.
  3. Enter a valid username it the pop window that appears and hit enter. Note that new users are advised to maintain some correlation between their discord username and all their nicknames to make the two easy to remember.

You can do this repeatedly for any servers you are a member of.

This process will only change your nickname for the selected server without affecting your username and nicknames used on other servers. If you have “too many servers” you may want to consider using the same nickname across a bunch of them to avoid you don't mix them up or forget.

It is also possible to change your discord username completely by going to settings. While in settings, select the edit button shown alongside your details and enter a valid username. Note that you will need to confirm your password to effect the changes.

A note for the reader

Discord was made by brilliant minds who wanted to give gamers an excellent platform to share experiences and ideas among other things. While there are thousands of channels with constructive intentions, you may find yourself engaged in servers with obscene content. For this reason, parents are advised to monitor what kids below 13 accessing through discord. If possible, they should be restricted to only access private servers with known friends or public servers with content suitable for general viewership. It has been reported that groups and servers with more than 10 members are more prone to NSFW content.
